The Episcopal Church in the United States is a part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, comprising some 73 million Anglicans in 38 member provinces.
The Anglican Communion has common roots with the Church of England, though its national churches are autonomous. The Anglican Communion finds its unity in its common heritage grounded in Holy Scripture, the ancient creeds, the sacraments, the orders of ministry, and "The Book of Common Prayer".
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Rowan Williams, is the head of the Anglican Communion.
