Gen 17:17: Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
Lord, forgive us if we sometimes laugh at your promises. Abraham fell on his face and laughed when you promised he would conceive a child with Sara. Sara laughed, too. Nevertheless, you gave them that son, and named him Isaac- he laughs.
Who can say you don’t have a sense of humor?
There is so much tragedy that besets us. Including your suffering on the cross for us. There can’t be anything funny in that. Except that in the end it all turns out to be a comedy.
In all seriousness and humility, help us follow your example by bearing our crosses with courage and steadfast love. Forgive us when we can’t help but laugh at the outrageous promise you persist in making: that all shall be well, that even we will rise from the dead. And fill us with true joy when we consider the improbable ways you keep bringing goodness out of us.
